The End of Sports?

dwrJust when I am absolutely convinced that transgender radicals have plumbed the deepest depths of absurdity, they prove me wrong. We’re now told, as Barbara Kay notes in the linked article, that rather than being observed at birth, a baby’s gender is “assigned” at birth.

I suppose that this means that even if a baby arrives with the appendage that would traditionally indicate that “It’s a boy!”, nowadays it ain’t necessarily so. A parent – or maybe we’ll need a specialist in these things – can with a straight face, declare the child is indeed a boy, but, just as plausibly that it’s a girl, or neither, or perhaps one of many dozens of other modern permutations and combinations of gender. Like maybe: “It’s a ZIE!”

Now I think a problem may arise when the child reaches 10 or 12 or 14 years old and decides otherwise. But of course, that’s 10 or 12 or 14 years down the road from now, and the gender bending, leading edge Progressivists will have moved on to the latest trendy but even more idiotic – is it possible? – fad. Or, dare we hope, we will soon reach the actual bottom and begin the long upward swim towards sanity.

indexBarbara KayIn any case, you should read the excellent accompanying article (link) by Barbara Kay which goes into some of the problems that are inevitably cropping up in sports. You know, when the 6 foot 5, 300 pound, trans “woman” competing against actual women in the shot put, wins every time. Bad news for bookmakers.

We evolved, or were created, or were created by evolution, to mate heterosexually. That’s not a religious or philosophical statement, it’s just a scientific observation. The craziness needs to end, and it will only end and help begin when we become brave and honest enough to admit that Gender Identity Disorder, and Transgenderism, and same sex attractions are disorders. The truth always sets you free; lies, even lies meant to be kind never do.

Will this cold never end!

It’s Barack Obama, or Reality

dwr.jpgFor those who like to be informed, there are a couple of really big events coming up in the next few weeks in Calgary. The first event is the Things that Matter Conference, February 8 and 9 at the Best Western, Port O’ Call. Sponsored by the Essentials of Freedom organization, it has an incredible lineup of speakers. Here are a few.

Dr. John Robson is probably Canada’s leading expert on the freedoms that have been won in the 800 years since Magna Carta, and how quickly we are losing them in Canada.

Dr. Jack Mintz of the University of Calgary is one of the world’s most respected economists, who recognizes that, financially at least, Alberta would be better off as an independent country.

Dr. Ted Morton is Canada’s leading expert on the chaotic, and grossly unfair equalization formula, and how it must be fixed.

John Carpay LL.B. is founder of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom, JCCF, and Canada’s strongest fighter against the erosion of our fundamental freedoms, by governments at the provincial and federal level.

Dr. Patrick Moore was a co-founder of Greenpeace. In 1971 Moore’s co-founder, Bob Hunter wrote, “Moore was quickly accepted into the inner circle (of Greenpeace) on the basis of his scientific background, his reputation [as an environmental activist], and his ability to inject practical, no-nonsense insights into the discussions.”

I’m a big believer in no-nonsense. But now, Dr. Moore repudiates Greenpeace for its utter abandonment of science in favour of political advocacy. Sadly, Greenpeace has degenerated into an organization mostly known for its stunts.

I took the trouble to look up their Board of Directors, and I couldn’t find one scientist among them. Almost every board member of this bloated, $300 million a year, emotion peddling business, has a social activist background.

We’ve been to The Essentials of Freedom Conference since its inception and it’s gotten better every year. This year will be the best yet, and there will be guests from the US and all areas of Canada, from Québec to Vancouver Island.

The other upcoming big event is Barack Obama on March 5. Obama was a community organizer who became President of the United States from January 2009 to January 2017.

During his time as President, Barack Obama doubled the US national debt; ignored the rise of ISIS in the Middle East leading to one of the biggest humanitarian crises so far in the 21st century; foolishly declared that the Cold War was over and stood by while Vladimir Putin rolled his tanks over his neighbours; and, by constantly and prematurely injecting himself into domestic racial incidents, set back American race relations by two generations.

Meritha and I are already registered for one of these events, and you can guess which one it is. Hope to see you there!

Nietzsche Rediscovered

DW Blog

I’ve always considered psychiatry to be a soft science at best, but in the last couple of years I’ve taken another look at it, mainly because Jordan Peterson seems to have hardened it up. Peterson actually refers to hard data, which many scientists do with decreasing frequency. Peterson often quotes Vienna psychiatrist Carl Jung, and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, although less approvingly of Nietzsche.

In a short video, Prof. John Robson succinctly analyses Peterson’s possible reasons for his ambivalent view of Nietzsche. You should watch it because Nietzsche’s ideas are vitally important to understanding the underlying reasons for the disintegration of Western culture.

John RobsonBy the way, John Robson, who might be called Canada’s walking encyclopedia on the history of rights and freedoms developed since Magna Carta, (and which we are now, sadly, in the process of losing thanks to Justin Trudeau’s genetically inherited admiration for all things dictatorial), is a featured speaker at the upcoming Things That Matter conference to be held on February 8 and 9 at the Best Western, Port O Call Hotel at 1935 McKnight Boulevard NE, Calgary.

I’ve attended the conference since its inception, and it’s gotten better each year. Last year, numerous attendees from across Canada said it was the best conference they’ve ever attended. With this year’s lineup of speakers, 2019’s conference will be better yet.

Stay warm! Spring is only two months away, or three, or four, depending on climate change of course.

The Too Often Quoted, Kristopher Wells

DW Blog

In Alberta, it now seems that every time something comes up regarding an LGBT issue, Kristopher Wells pops up as the go to expert; always against parents, and always on the side of “progress” Let’s look at what Kristopher Wells means by progress.

Wells is a professor, and a confidant of Alberta’s Education Minister, David Eggen. About three years ago, Mr. Eggen engaged Wells to supervise the construction and launch of Alberta Education’s Gay Straight Alliance, or GSA, website. For several months no one paid attention, but then, Edmonton mother, Theresa Ng who is now with Parents for Choice, decided to have a look.

Ms. Ng found numerous links from the GSA website to sexually explicit sites. If you haven’t already, it’s very important that you follow the link. You need to be aware of these sites, included the one that gave instructions on “25 sex positions you can try at home”, and another on how to give oral sex. For 5 years and up?!

Kris WellsWhen confronted with absolute proof of the links – Theresa Ng had presciently taken screenshots of the linked websites – the links were removed. But then Kristopher Wells took to social media to denounce Ms. Ng for being “hysterical” and “sensationalist.” Are you serious? In what demented world is a mother being hysterical by objecting to explicitly sexual content being provided, unbeknownst to her, to her children?

Judging by his verbal attack on Theresa Ng, Mr. Wells feels that making such material available to five, six, seven, and eight-year-olds is desirable. Anyone that thinks that way is, at the very least, exhibiting an appalling lack of judgment. There might also be serious psychological issues involved, for which Mr. Wells would deserve our sympathy.

But in either or both cases, Mr. Wells should not be allowed to have anything whatsoever to do with the education of Alberta’s children. Yet Mr. Wells is still looked to as an advisor by Education Minister David Eggen; and was the keynote speaker at an Alberta Teachers Association conference last summer. Alberta parents, that middle finger was for you.

Wells is also used as a source by the media, including, the Calgary Herald, the Calgary Sun, the CBC, and the consistently ridiculous, Star Metro. That the media would look to such an individual for comment says volumes about media elitists disdain for science, decency, and basic common sense, and their insouciant disregard for the innocence of children.

Or maybe they’re just too lazy to investigate, and can thereby claim ignorance. Whatever; when a member of the media quotes Kristopher Wells be aware that he’s the guy who thinks it’s OK to provide Alberta’s little children with quick access to explicit sexual instructions.

David EggenThese facts tell you everything you need to know before you vote in the upcoming Alberta election. Because, knowing all these facts – and she must have – Rachel Notley has continued with David Eggen as Minister of Education, which, in practical terms, makes her complicit in what normal people would see as the corruption of minors.

Here’s what Pennsylvania law says regarding the corruption of minors. “(ii) Whoever, being of the age of 18 years and upwards, by any course of conduct in violation of Chapter 31 (relating to sexual offenses) corrupts or tends to corrupt the morals of any minor less than 18 years of age, or who aids, abets, entices or encourages any such minor in the commission of an offense under Chapter 31 commits a felony of the third degree.” Under 18? What about providing sexually explicit material to children under 8?

NotleyLuckily for Ms. Notley, Mr. Eggen, and Mr. Wells, they live in Alberta, because in Pennsylvania it’s possible they could be charged with a felony and imprisoned. Not a bad idea in my opinion, but in Alberta, the best we can do and must do, four months from now, is throw the creeps out!

Hyenas under the Rainbow Flag

DW Blog

I’ve been to Africa several times, and I can tell you that hyenas are not well liked. Hyenas appear cowardly, and they have a weird laughing yap that sounds a bit creepy, and they are reputed to grab children. Probably rare, but it has happened.

Which brings me to the title of this blog. I’ll wager that most people in the LGBT community support the rainbow flag. I’ll also wager that most of them simply want to live their lives as good citizens of their city and country, and to allow others live their lives as they see fit. At least that’s been my observation over nearly 60 years.

In 1963, my very naïve, 19-year-old self headed off to the big city, where I soon found a job. One of the fellows I worked with was homosexual. (It took me about four months to figure it out because I honestly could not believe that a guy could not like girls.  And “gay” had nothing to do with homosexuality.)

We remained friends, although 1963 was six years before the gay rights movement even got started, and having a homosexual friend was not always comfortable. “Beating up Fags” was Saturday night entertainment for some, maybe the cops would pitch in to to help! Friends of homosexuals were often viewed with suspicion and contempt.

I thought then, and I still do, that the way people in the homosexual/transgender community were treated, was appalling. We’ve made a lot of progress since then, and most people treat LGBT individuals with decency and respect. Governments recognize their rights as citizens and taxpayers. But as is usually the case with human societies, we’ve gone almost directly from one ditch, way past the centre, through the other ditch, and we’re now far into the swamp, and are sinking fast.

HyenasBecause there is a cohort, a pack embedded within the LGBT community, that used to be known as “recruiters”. I call them hyenas. Those are people who watch for children with social vulnerabilities; awkwardness, shyness around the opposite sex or obvious gender confusion, and they try to guide or entice them into the LGBT lifestyle.

Last week I blogged about the naked hypocrisy of the Progressivist politicians and media attack on civil rights lawyer, John Carpay, for mentioning the Nazi swastika, and the Communist hammer and sickle, and the Rainbow Flag, in the same sentence.

John CarpayMr. Carpay had every reason to do so. Contrary to national and international law, this totalitarian minded pack of hyenas has legislated that parents cannot be informed if their children are experiencing gender confusion. Not even 5, 6, 7, and 8 year olds! Coming between children and their parents to create the society they wanted was a standard Nazis and Communist tactic. John Carpay was absolutely right to make his comparison.

Yapping and circling, Alberta’s Minister of Education and his advisors, apparently with the approval of the premier, are hell-bent on grabbing and destroying as many children’s lives as possible. And far too many complicit or lazy journalists yap their approval.

That’s what last week’s blog was about, and if you haven’t read it or passed it along, here’s the link. I have a great-grandson who within two or three years will be in our “education” system, so this issue is very personal to me.

But it’s also happening now, or will happen, wherever you live; in your province, and your state, and your country. That sounds alarmist, but it’s true.

Even as I was working on this blog, there came the sickening news that 17 young people, in one school, in England, most of them autistic, are being groomed to cosmetically change their gender. Follow this link. What these hyenas are doing has no basis in science. In fact, credible child psychologists and researchers say that it’s child abuse. Do ya think?

I have a transgender friend who, even as middle-aged man had his genitals removed and a vagina fashioned. A couple of years later he told me that it had been a terrible mistake and had changed nothing. Studies show that that is the reality for a majority of these permanently mutilated people. Sadly, many commit suicide. And still, the hyenas circle and yap.

It’s my fervent hope that someday these abusers will be hauled into court by their victims, there to be bankrupted by a massive class action lawsuit. Better yet, that someday they are charged with child abuse and sent to prison.

And if that doesn’t happen, let me pass along something that Jesus predicted about the fate of those who destroy children’s lives, and I quote: “It is inevitable that stumbling blocks will come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him to have a millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.”

So be informed. Take the time to follow the links. Share with your email list, and on Facebook and Twitter!

John Carpay and the Rainbow Flag

Early 2019. This an update to a blog I published on November 15, 2018.  The original blog was  viewed thousands of times in nearly 50 countries, so I’d like to provide some context for non Canadians.

The NDP is a party in Canada that defines itself as moderately socialist, or Social Democrat. It, (and other left wing parties), has recently become distinctly totalitarian in its ideological approach to many issues, most notably, its sexualization of education from kindergarten through high school. They apparently see no difference between 7 and 17 year olds. What I wrote about has come, or will be coming to your country, unless perhaps you live in Saudi Arabia.

This blog is for our children and grandchildren.

At a conference held in Calgary, Canada on Saturday, November 10, 2018, John Carpay, founder of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom, made the mistake of putting Nazi and Communist symbols and the rainbow flag in the same sentence. The left lost its mind. Admittedly, in the context of the “gotcha” times in which we live, John’s wording was an invitation for left-wing organizations and commentators to summon their enormous reserves of self-righteous, and entirely hypocritical, indignation.

The Calgary Herald’s Don Braid puffed that, “Vile” is a mild word for John Carpay’s linking of the swastika and the hammer and sickle with the rainbow flag of Gay Pride.” Braid went on: “How is it “hostility toward individual freedoms” when LGBTQ kids are at last accorded some official respect and acceptance — when they are, in fact, granted individual freedom?”

Individual freedom for five, six, seven, and eight-year-olds? Now there’s a postmodern spin on freedom. Freedom from what? Their parents? Freedom to have the nanny-state guide them from what is, almost always, a temporary childhood gender identity confusion, into a permanent state of gender crisis? Freedom for the government to help tomboyish little girls as young as three begin transitioning from their birth gender, to becoming a “chemicals and cosmetics boy”, and freedom for the government to pass a law that says, the parents cannot be told?

Those so-called laws are nationally and internationally, illegal. They are also totalitarian, unscientific, and plainly constitute child abuse. At least, so say many objective scientists in the field of childhood gender identity disorder.

Nazi Germany and Communist Russia and Maoist China all believed in the supremacy of the state, and, as Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda minister boasted: “The youth belong to us.” And now by their decision to illegally prevent the parents of children as young as five from being told about the sexual identity confusion that their child is experiencing, the NDP  is signalling that, exactly like the Nazis, it’s their view that parents and families are subordinate to the state.

But again, regarding children’s rights, Don Braid says that: “Any attempt to limit those rights is not a subject for legitimate debate, any more than the rainbow flag is a swastika.” Well Mr. Braid, to be clear, no one, including John Carpay, has ever said the rainbow flag is a swastika. (The notion that children’s rights have no limitations is mindless nonsense)

Actually, limiting the rights of parents to know what’s happening to their children, and, interfering in a child’s right to have the support of their parents is very Nazi-ish, and is most decidedly a topic for a legitimate debate, especially when the government imposing the limits looks for guidance to individuals like Dr. Kristopher Wells. (pictured)

Kris WellsWells is a professor, and a confidant of Alberta’s education Minister, David Eggen. Mr. Eggen engaged Wells to supervise the construction and launch of Alberta’s Gay Straight Alliance, or GSA, website. For several months, no one paid attention. And then, Edmonton mother, Theresa Ng who is now with Parents for Choice, decided to have a look.

Ms. Ng found numerous links from the Wells supervised GSA website to sexually explicit sites. These sites included one that gave instructions on 25 sexual positions you can try at home, and another on how to give oral sex. There was also a description of felching, a practice so sickening and perverted that I’ll let you look it up for yourself. Remember, the GSA website is government approved for ages five through high school. It’s obviously not approved by parents.

I can imagine NDP supporters saying, actually I’ve talked to NDP supporters who say that they simply can’t believe that what I’m telling them is true. Sadly, it is, and here’s proof. Please scroll all the way to the bottom of the 20 PDFs, because this is what was being provided for your children and grandchildren, and you need to know.

When confronted with proof of the links – Theresa Ng had presciently taken screenshots of the linked websites – the links were removed. But then Kristopher Wells took to social media to denounce Ms. Ng for being “hysterical” and “sensationalist.” Seriously? A mother objecting to explicitly sexual content being provided to her children, without her knowledge or consent, is being hysterical and sensationalist? In what dystopian reality does Mr. Wells live? Again, here’s the link. You decide.

It’s beyond my comprehension, but Kristopher Wells is still an advisor to the NDP Alberta government, and earlier this year was the keynote speaker at an Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) conference. As a parent, does that make you feel comfortable? As an NDP or Progressivist supporter, does that make you feel comfortable? Does it make Don Braid feel comfortable?

Wells Christians Nazis CartoonDid this cartoon equating Christians to Nazis and ISIS, published on Twitter by Kristopher Wells in June 2016, inspire Don Braid to somewhere call it “vile”? I couldn’t find it. Wells has never apologized, and the CBC, and the Metro Star, a local publication of the almost comically Progressivist Toronto Star, seem to be okay with the cartoon, and with Well’s lack of apology.

John CarpayI was at the conference at which Mr. Carpay spoke and I listened to his entire speech. Full disclosure: I know John Carpay, and I know with absolute certainty, that to suggest that he broadly equates the rainbow flag with Nazi-ism or Communism is utter nonsense. John is simply one of Canada’s most effective defenders of freedom and so the Progressivist Left hates him.

When a very moderate conservative like John Carpay inadvertently uses words in a way that can be spun negatively, Leftist Progressivists like Don Braid and the left wing media reveal themselves as total hypocrites, and purveyors of fake news.

Because when extremist and totalitarian minded leftists equate Christians with Nazis and ISIS, and defend the radical and extreme sexualization of little children, and specifically associate themselves with the rainbow flag, then people like Don Braid and the Progressivist Left go silent. Instead they use these same extremists as “sources”, and “trusted advisors” and “keynote speakers”.

Back to you Mr. Braid.

I’m Dave Reesor.

Trump, Transgender, and the NDP!

DW Blog

Recent issues of The Economist magazine included articles that suggest that they have decided to make some tentative steps back towards responsible journalism.

The first was about Donald Trump’s foreign policy, for which they still had plenty of criticism. But after much to-ing and fro-ing, there came this statement. “Mr. Trump’s foreign policy team appears to be working more effectively than some of its predecessors.” After double checking to make sure I was reading The Economist, I sent them a note congratulating them on their baby step back towards objectivity.

Then a couple of weeks later they featured a lengthy article on transgender-ism entitled: “The body of law”. This time, again contrary to my expectations, The Economist was exceptionally objective.

Transgender-ism has been around for a long time, but it’s always been regarded as a disorder. In ancient times, i.e., the 90s, it was actually believed that if you were born with male genitalia, you were a male, and if you were born with female genitalia you were a female.

Not so say the activists, and Alberta’s (current) government. If you’re a boy and you feel like a girl, well then, Bob’s your uncle and you’re a girl! And you get to use the girl’s washroom, and showers! Real girls feel uncomfortable about that? “Suck it up sisters” says Alberta’s oh so Progressivist government. (They also apparently think it’s okay for little kids as young as five to have access to websites telling them about things like 25 sex positions you can try at home, and how to give oral sex. But that was another blog.)

Children are under tremendous pressure, from people who should be protecting them,  to become sexually active, and to get involved in the Progressivist flavor of the month, currently, transgenderism. The Economist says, sensibly, that maybe we should proceed with caution.

It’s insanity, but some clinics in the United States are supporting gender transition; i.e., change of name, pronouns and clothing, for children as young as three. They’re recommending mastectomies for girls as young as 13. This is the stuff that should send you to jail, or a mental institution.

The American Academy of Pediatrics endorses this “hurry up and transition” approach, saying delay harms children unnecessarily. Then they cite scientific papers to justify their position, when those same papers actually refute their position. There is no credible research that backs their position, so they count on people’s ignorance on the issue to slide the lie past. I’ve read about AAP for years, and they’ve long since been taken over by radicals from the LGBT community.

The more scientifically minded American College of Pediatricians, (ACP), correctly calls the foolishness endorsed by the AAP, child abuse.

In Britain little kids are officially being taught that “Gender is much more than the body you were born with.” There’s a “Kids Guide to Gender Identity” for five-year-olds which tells them that, “Kids know a lot about themselves. They know who they are by how they feel inside.” So, 21st century Postmodernism has abolished gender identity disorder. Ignore that penis. If you feel like a girl, you are a girl!

trans-man-having-baby**How crazy can it get? Figure out the photo if you can.

And there’s the safety issue. Radicals want transgendered individuals to use the showers and change rooms that correspond with the gender they have chosen, not their genitalia. But surveys show that mixed sex changing rooms are where most sexual assaults happen. The Alberta government wants them in your school. Are you listening?

The Economist suggested that “To resolve the conflicts between trans rights, and the rights of natal women and children … (those who identify with their birth gender – parenthesis mine) … requires research, and reasoned debate”. I’d suggest that a small dose of common sense could resolve the issue more quickly.

And here it is, an Alberta policy spelled out by The Economist. “If a child expresses a transgender identity to a teacher, trans rights guides say that there is no need to tell parents.” But in Rachel Notley’s Alberta, a new law says that teachers can not tell the parents, even if they think they should.

Alberta’s current government has gone leading-edge lunacy on this anti-science, child abusive craziness. I suspect they’ll be thrown out in the next election.

In my view, they can’t be thrown far enough.

I’m Dave Reesor

BTW, The Economist article included a piece on the JCCF, or Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom. John Carpay and his team, and other organizations like Parents for Choice, are doing essential work, protecting our rights, and the rights and safety of our children. Please support them!

The Right to Discriminate

Dave 07To Discriminate means to recognize a distinction between things. I think that even the dimmest among us recognizes that red and green are two different colors and that some people have better voices than others and some people are better athletes than others. So we discriminate when we go to a concert, or an athletic event.

But discrimination also means to make an unjust or prejudicial distinction in the treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, sex, or age. I think that most people recognize that that type of discrimination is seriously wrong, but should it be illegal? As a Christian with a distinctly libertarian bent, I don’t think so, unless it advocates, or acts out violence.

But then, at an even deeper level, discrimination finds itself at the intersect between choices, and rights, and that’s where a lot of seriously wrongheaded thinking takes place, particularly as regards sexuality.

I’m straight, and I had no choice in that matter; it’s just what I am. But nearly 52 years ago I made a choice to end my single existence, and to get married. However, my choice was not automatically granted; I had to ask Meritha, (it was on about the 5th date and at first she thought I was joking), and she had to accept, otherwise I might still be single.

My heterosexuality was not a choice; but to be married was, and it was contingent on the acceptance of my choice by someone else. And even then, after I had Meritha on side, we  had to choose when and where to be married; who to perform the ceremony; who to cater, and so on. And every one of our choices had to be agreed to by someone else, and every one of those individuals had every right to refuse our choice, on any grounds whatsoever.

Recently, the US Supreme Court upheld a Colorado baker’s right to refuse to bake a cake celebrating a same-sex marriage. It’s regarded as a victory for freedom of religion, but there are some questions as to how effective it will be in the long run. Because there is increasingly a lot of severely muddle-headed thinking around sexuality.

So again, here’s what I think. It’s not scientifically supported, but let’s allow that the same-sex couple in Colorado were both born gay and that they had no choice in their sexual attraction. But their “marriage” unequivocally represented a continuum of choices. First of all, who to marry. Once they were past that hurdle, who to perform the ceremony, where to hold the ceremony and the celebration afterwards. Then, who to cater the event, and who they chose to make the cake.

Every one of those was a choice, not a right, and for the marriage plans to go forward, those choices either had be accepted by the other parties involved, or a different choice made. I personally see no reason that those choices could not be refused on any grounds whatsoever, but for certain, a person should have been able to refuse them on the grounds of their freedom of association, or of conscience. Those are universally recognized human rights. Marriage is not an inherent human right, nor are the rituals surrounding marriage.

trans-man-having-babyWe need to start to think clearly about sexuality, because when you don’t you end up with situations like this.

Try to figure it out.

Then think of the child.

I’m Dave Reesor, and please let me know what you think.

** For more perspective, I wrote a blog about this issue a few years ago.

Please accept …. my apology

Dave 07Back in the mists of time, 1960 to be exact, or prehistory to Millennials, Brenda Lee had a monster hit called “I’m Sorry”. One of the lines was: “I’m sorry, so sorry; please accept my apology.” With some slight modifications, it could have been the theme song for Canadian governments for the past 20 years or so.

Here’s the curve ball; I think apologies are okay, and even helpful if done sincerely, and properly contextualized.

In 1988, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney apologized to Japanese Canadians for their internment during World War II, and paid a symbolic redress. Japanese Canadians were wronged, although in the context of World War II, and with Japanese advances throughout the Pacific and even into the Aleutian Islands, paranoia was understandable, if not excusable.

In the 1800s, Chinese laborers/navvies were brought to Canada, and the United States, to build canals and railways. When the projects were completed, the Chinese men naturally wanted to bring their families to join them. In Canada they were faced with a $50 per person poll tax, which was raised to $100, and then $500. For decades, that tax successfully minimized Chinese immigration. In 2006, the Harper government apologized, and gave a token compensation to Chinese Canadians, or their descendants, for their mistreatment.

More recently, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has apologized to aboriginal Canadians who were abused in Newfoundland/Labrador residential schools. I believe it was appropriate, as long as we remember the context.

Not all aboriginal Canadians look back on the residential school as unremittingly negative. It also must be remembered, that in the context of the times, transportation from isolated communities was extremely difficult. Furthermore, it was sincerely, and to some extent, justifiably believed, that assimilation into white society would provide a better future for native children.

Obviously, the program went too far, and just as obviously, not enough care was taken to weed out the sadists and perverts that managed to insinuate themselves into the system.

Most recently, Prime Minister Trudeau has apologized to those members of the LGBTQ community who were abused under Canadian law, by the Canadian government. I happen to agree with that apology as well.

In 1963, at age 19, I moved to Calgary, from the tiny community of Consul Saskatchewan, where homosexuality was regarded – at least by me – as a myth. Being a hard-working farm boy, I soon got a job, and I made some friends among my colleagues. After about five months of wondering why Jack never wanted to go on a double date with me, the penny dropped, and I realized that homosexuality was real, and that Jack was homosexual. (The word gay had yet to be co-opted)

On a visit back to the farm, I told my dad about Jack. He was pretty sanguine about it, and said that he had known some homosexuals in the Air Force. He seemed to regard them as mostly regular people who had a significant psychological disorder, and I accepted that. I haven’t changed my mind.

But 55 years ago, disdain and abuse were part of everyday life for homosexuals. One Saturday evening, another buddy and I were out looking for something to do and we bumped into a group of three or four fellows our age. They suggested: “Let’s go to Memorial Park and beat up some fags.”

I didn’t understand them at first and when they explained what they were suggesting, I said: “Why would we do that? They have enough problems already.” My buddy and I went one direction; I don’t know where the other guys went. But reporting them to the police wouldn’t have accomplished anything; back then the police might’ve gone along for the entertainment, or even have joined in.

It got even worse, and I hate to say this, but I was talking about homosexuality to an older “Christian” man one day, and he said: “In my opinion, they should all be taken out and shot.” I was appalled, and I asked if he thought that would be Jesus’ attitude. I don’t remember his answer, but I’m still sickened at the memory of the conversation.

55 years ago, homosexuals who were quietly living their lives could be arrested and locked up. So when Pierre Trudeau said: “The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation,” I agreed with him. But the fact is, that for years, the Canadian government did aid and abet and practice, indefensible abuse of what we now call the LGBTQ community. An apology for that was not out of line; it was the right thing to do.

Trans man having babyBut of course, there’s a ditch on both sides of the road, and we’ve gone from horribly abusing homosexuals, to mindlessly normalizing every sexual disorder imaginable, and insisting that it be celebrated. That’s intellectually and scientifically and socially dishonest, and if I do have a phobia, it’s about the intellectual dishonesty which itself has become normalized.

Who Cares?

Dave 07The media has been gaga for the past week or so, because……. wait for it………. Prince Harry is engaged!! Well I suppose it’s about time; he’s in his 30s after all.

But there’s  more!! He’s engaged to a woman “of colour”!!! Here’s the breathless prose used by many of the newspapers that use The Associated Press.

“For some black women, Megan Markel and Prince Harry’s engagement was something more. One of the world’s most eligible bachelors has chosen someone who looks like them and grew up like them.”

Meghan MarkleOh really? Here’s a picture of Meghan Markel, and I can tell you that we have grandsons that are multiple shades browner than she is, especially after they go shirtless and hatless most of the summer. I know, they’re supposed to cover up, but good luck with that.

But, apparently, Ms. Markel’s heritage is half African-American, so let’s get right to the really important question which I sincerely believe should be: “Who Cares?” We should’ve gotten past the mixed colour marriage issue about 3000 years ago, when Moses married a black woman from southern Sudan. Yes, that Moses. Look it up.

Most of us are mixed race. Meritha and I have ordered Ancestry.com DNA kits for each other for ‘Christmas, so we can finally find out who we’re living with. With my Celtic ancestry, I’m concerned about how much Neanderthal DNA might still be in there, and then, Meritha’s inevitable comment: “We spent $100 to find out something that I already knew?”

Anyway, it seems to me that the real story is Harry’s red hair. Here we have a mixed race American actress marrying an English red head. Now that’s a story, because, let’s face it, there are far fewer redheads in the entire world than there are people of mixed race.

It actually does astonish and dismay me that mixed race couples are still a news item in 2017. I had hoped that with the election of Barack Obama nine years ago, race relations would improve, and the racial origin fixation would abate. Sadly, under Obama they both became worse, certainly in part because he insisted on taking a racially biased position on several incidents between Caucasian and African-Americans, even before the facts were known.

I’ve always insisted that racism is not a white disease, it’s a human disease. I’ve told this story before, but in the late 80s and early 90s I made several trips to Africa on business. On one of them, the Canadian embassy in Dar es Salaam provided a car, and a driver named Aggrey Mponguliana. Sounds kind of Ndebele/Italian doesn’t it?

Anyway, on a subsequent trip to Tanzania I invited Aggrey and his wife Anna to join me for dinner at my hotel in downtown Dar es Salaam, and during our conversation we discovered that we had several things in common. But we really had different experiences when it came to marriage customs. Anna revealed to me that Aggrey had paid 10 cows for her. I don’t think we had cows on the farm when Meritha and I were married, so I suppose I’d have had to pay her dad about 50 sheep!

Anna went on, that had she been lighter skinned, Aggrey would have had to pay up to 20 cows to her father. That’s 10 extra cows for less pigmentation! It struck me again how ridiculous the whole skin colour issue is.

I said that it seemed to me that that the human race must be crazy. Caucasians lie on tanning beds or the beach, to turn brown; East Asians wear enormous hats to prevent browning, and African men give extra cows for a lighter skin. Some people actually bleach their skin to become whiter, and others spray on brown to become browner.

And all this to satisfy the notion – unfortunately sometimes true – that a different skin colour will help you be more successful, even though it won’t make the slightest difference to the kind of person you are. Homo Sapiens? No, Homo Stupidus.

So I’m with Billington Bulworth who famously suggested – and I’ll have to clean up his language, a lot – that we should keep inter-marrying until we’re all the same colour. Not a bad idea.

Because then maybe we can focus our conversations, and our headlines, on more important things.
