Racism is Other-ism

dwr.jpgRacism, and Racist, are bad words. It’s not so much that they are meant to describe a nasty human trait, but that they are etymologically incorrect. (My wife opined, correctly I believe, that they’re political words.) Every human being is of the same race, that is, the human race, so it follows that the only racists are haters of humans, individuals like David Suzuki who has described humans as the Earth’s “maggots”. (Comically hypocritical coming from a guy who has five kids.)

The correct word is Other-ism, and we’re all potential Other-ists. We’re prone to looking at others and making judgments based on their “other” skin colour, clothing, ethnic origin, caste, tribe, weight, occupation, and anything else whereby we can identify them as being other and lesser than us, and therefore us being better than them. Other-ism is the root cause of bullying, unjustified discrimination, and indifference.

DalitOther-ism lurks in every human heart, and left unchecked becomes part of our life and our culture. India is Possibly the most Other-ist nation on earth. in addition to all the standard Other-isms, divisions based on the caste system still exist, and why wouldn’t they? In Eastern religions, your situation, good or bad, is simply karma for your deeds in a previous incarnation.  If you’re an Untouchable (Dalit) cleaning sewers, (pictured), that’s your lot in this life, and it’s your own fault.

In Africa, Other-ism is rampant. Other tribe, other social status, other rung on the upward mobility ladder, even other shade of brown. I was in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and had invited our driver from a previous trip, and his wife, to join me at my hotel for dinner. They were Aggrey and Anna Mponguliana, and during dinner we discovered that they, and Meritha and I, had been married the same year. The conversation turned to our courtships, and Anna revealed to me that Aggrey had paid 10 cows for her. Then she added, that if her skin had been lighter, Aggrey might have had to pay 20 cows. I suggested that Homo sapiens, which ironically means “wise humans”, should actually be called Homo stupidus, because while Africans and Asians go to great lengths to lighten their skin colour, Caucasians lie on the beach risking skin cancer to look more like Africans and Asians.

On every trip to Africa, I experienced Other-ism myself. I learned a few words of Swahili, and one of them was Mzungu, meaning white man, and many times in elevators and on the streets, it was pretty clear that the Mzungu was being dissed.

I once was told that aboriginal North Americans could not possibly be racist, (Other-ist) because they were themselves subjected to Other-ism. A few weeks later, a prominent aboriginal chief stated, publicly, that Hitler had not been unreasonable when he “fried 6 million Jews”.

Other-ism is found in every culture, but it’s solution is not to be found in legislation, nor in burning down your neighborhood. Rather, it’s in a change of perspective brought about by self-examination. Other-ism is rooted in PRIDE, and as CS Lewis said, pride is what turned Lucifer, an angel of light, into the Devil himself. Pride lurks in every human heart, and it’s in our individual hearts that solutions begin.

Almost everyone experiences Other-ism at some point in their life, and every one of us, without exception, is a potential Other-ist. Let’s begin solving Other-ism by ruthlessly rooting out the problem where it starts.

Calgary’s Insane Bylaw

dwr.jpgTo North Americans that have kept their minds throughout 50 years of postmodernism, it’s become increasingly clear that many Californians have lost theirs. A couple of legislators in “going broke” California are proposing spending $15 million subsidizing so-called gender transitioning therapy and surgery.

Laura Perry is going to testify against the spending. About a decade ago she had a double mastectomy because she believed that she was a man trapped in a woman’s body. She thought it was going to change her life, but says she was devastated when she realized that her surgery actually hadn’t made her a man. She says that her suicidal thoughts and those of many in a similar situation, were actually worse after the so-called treatment.

Another person opposing the bill is Dr. Quentin L. Van Meter, a board-certified Pediatric Endocrinologist with 40 years of experience. He says: “Biological bedrock science proves that human beings are binary sexual beings with complementary anatomy that is intended to facilitate procreation.”

I’ve been saying the same thing, albeit slightly differently. “Human beings evolved, or were created, or were created by evolution, to mate heterosexually. That is not only the natural order of things in our species, but it is in every animal species, and even in many plant species. Sexual attraction or gender identification outside of that order, is disorder. In fact, children who believe that they’re not the gender with which they were born, are scientifically referred to as having GID, or Gender Identity Disorder. Likewise, those sexually attracted to the same sex have a sexual attraction disorder.”

That biological observation in no way suggests or excuses mistreatment or discrimination against people with those disorders. I believe that now, and I lived it nearly 60 years ago. Hanging out with a gay friend, now, is trendy. In Calgary in 1963, not so much.

Dr SohScience is based on facts, and as a Calgarian, I find it embarrassing that our City Counselors are traveling that same intellectually incoherent path through the postmodern wilderness as those California legislators. They’re pursuing a nanny-state bylaw that forbids individuals from receiving counseling that might help them leave a lifestyle that they are uncomfortable with. But those same individuals, and even little children, are encouraged to receive counseling that affirms them in living a life of sexual identity or attraction disorder. Quack surgeons in the LGBT movement are performing mastectomies on little girls as young as thirteen.

The assertion by radical activists in the LGBT community, that no one ever truly leaves the LGBT lifestyle, is a lie. I’ve been to several conferences where there were many individuals who testified that they had, and I’ve had personal conversations with them. Do some research and you’ll find thousands.

Here’s a reality check. I had a friend who lived a straight life until he was in his late forties, and then came out that he had spent his life feeling like he was a female trapped in a male body. So about 15 years ago he took the hormones. Then was legally mutilated by a surgeon who assured him that he was now a woman. Two years later he confided to me it had been a horrible mistake and that henceforth he would live as what he was, a man minus his genitals.

My friend’s story should make you cry, and it should make you angry. Because Calgary counselors are now saying that what happened to my friend was acceptable, but, that if he was now in the same situation and sought counseling to help him live by his DNA, his counselor could be fined, and jailed. Pardon me for being so blunt, but you have to have stepped across the border, into insanity, to believe that that is rational.

GID Sports, and other endeavors.

dwr.jpgMale athletes who are noncompetitive in men sports, can now announce that they are henceforth a woman, and then, brazenly insist that they must be allowed to compete in women’s sports. Unsurprisingly, they make out like bandits, which they sort of are.

I mean, aren’t they stealing medals and trophies and records from real women, who, through no fault of their own, are on average lighter, and with much less muscle mass and upper body strength than biological men? Real female athletes are getting fed up with it, although many hold their tongue for fear of being ostracized or booted by spineless, politically correct sports organizations. Look at the picture. What exactly is the guy in the middle proud of?  Do you believe that this is fair?

Transgender man on podium

So far, no one seems to have had a clear solution. I do!

Here’s the definition of GID. “Gender identity disorders (GID) are disorders in which an individual exhibits marked and persistent identification with the opposite sex.” It’s real, but the current solution is destroying women’s sports. The acronym GID is rarely used in daily conversation, but it should be.

So, I am proposing some new sports divisions. We now have men’s divisions, women’s divisions, and special divisions for athletes with disabilities, including the Special Olympics. How about a new category of sport called GID. With GID Divisions.

Transgender “women” wishing to compete with their peers could compete in GIDD basketball, GIDD hockey, GIDD shot-put, etc., and of course the GIDD Olympics.

And for those of us not directly involved in the psychiatric or medical profession, rather than having to keep track of who knows how many genders, why couldn’t we simply refer to any individual with a Gender Identity Disorder, as having GID? I had an extremely intelligent and rational friend who had GID, and I’m positive he would agree.

I think it’s an acronym whose time has come!

Next few blogs I’ll be reporting on the Essentials of Freedom Conference in Red Deer. There were many, many well informed and thoughtful speakers. It’s a conference which is absolutely essential for those interested in the welfare of their children and grandchildren. We’ll let you know when the next one is coming along.

A Better Country?

dwr.jpgOn Canada Day, Paula Simons wrote an article in the Edmonton Journal entitled: “My Canada includes Alberta.” Heartwarming, if it were true.

But Alberta’s hurting, and it’s clear that some of our fellow provinces, and, most egregiously, the Canadian government, are deliberately adding to the pain.

Ms. Simons trots out the usual arguments. “We are a landlocked province, with an economy largely reliant on international trade. Do we really imagine that it will be easier for us to get our oil, our wheat, our beef, our canola, our lentils, to market if we’re cut off from any coast?

Does she mean more cut off than we are now? Does she actually believe that BC will block the railways which carry hundreds of thousands of containers from BC ports to distribution centres from Alberta to Newfoundland, or that Québec and Ontario will stop trains from moving west? Or that activists will block pipelines more successfully than they do now? Seems to me that a blocked pipeline is a blocked pipeline.

Simons frets about investor confidence in a new country, so let’s look at Singapore which became an independent country in 1965. They began with massive unemployment, a lack of housing, no natural resources, and almost no land – Singapore covers 722 km²; Calgary 825 km². Together, Alberta and Saskatchewan have 1,300,000 km², and massive natural resources that the world needs.

Within 35 years of independence Singapore was one of the richest countries in the world. It’s a world class banking and tech centre, and  even, get this, the central hub for the Asian oil industry. Singapore’s population is 5.6 million; Alberta and Saskatchewan’s combined is 5.4 million, and there’s almost unlimited room to grow.

Simons points out that Alberta is home to 45 First Nations, which control 140 separate reserves. She asks: “Do separatists imagine that all those First Nations will also want to leave Canada?”

It wouldn’t surprise me. When Canada’s indigenous people were asked in a recent poll if they felt respected by the federal government, and felt like a valued part of Canada, a whopping 66% said NO. (I’d be extremely interested in feedback from Indigenous Albertans on this.) In the same poll, only 20% of indigenous people think Justin Trudeau should be re-elected this fall.

It certainly seems that Albertans, including the vast majority of indigenous people are on exactly the same page. Albertans of all backgrounds are tired of being taken advantage of, or stymied by, our nanny-state. Alberta’s indigenous communities are chockablock with entrepreneurs that are ready to go, if only the nanny-state would get out of the way. Imagine getting rid of the stifling bureaucracy, until recently called; “Indian Affairs”.

Simons enthuses: “For all its flaws, and for all its systemic injustices, this is a truly extraordinary country, a nation-state built, not on ideology or ethno-nationalism, but on ideals of tolerance, inclusion and rational compromise.” Nation State? But Justin Trudeau has already told the world that Canada is “post national”.

JT and QueensNational, or post-national, whether it’s Justin Trudeau and his government, or the law societies of British Columbia and Ontario, in today’s Canada, tolerance, inclusion, and compromise apply only if you affirm  the latest Progressivist ideology. Otherwise you are excluded from federal programs, you are not allowed to open a law school, and you can end up in jail if you don’t mouth the approved pronouns.

Simons asserts that: “Canada is a remarkable experiment”, but then admits: “It doesn’t always succeed.”  Indeed, it succeeds less and less. In a country where the Constitution is regarded as, “A Living Tree”, onto which Left-Wing activists can graft whichever Progressivist ideology happens to be trending at the moment, conservatism and common sense and the freedoms gained over 800 years are being forced to the periphery. And Canada’s constitution and amending formula guarantee that there is no way to get them back.

For her emotive clincher, Ms. Simons notes that the Latin motto on Canada’s coat of arms means “They desire a better country.”

Me too. Indeed I dream of a Best Country, but it’s clear that’s no longer possible in Canada. And that’s why I’m a separatist.

Losing Western Civilization

dwr.jpgMeritha and I like Dr. Jordan Peterson, who is, shall we say, an uneasy member of the faculty of the University of Toronto. We also like American radio host, Dennis Prager, who on Prager University produces five-minute videos by extremely well informed and thoughtful people.

This conversation between the two of them displays the best of Jordan Peterson, and is something I would encourage every intelligent and informed person to take the time to watch. It’s informative, and while it reflects on what Western civilization has lost, and why, it’s inspiring and tells us that there may be a way back.

Having said that, Peterson makes a statement that I profoundly disagree with.

Peterson_Lecture_(33522701146)Peterson’s position has always been that he doesn’t know for certain that God exists, but that he lives as though He does. He suggests that if we truly believed that God existed we would live far better lives. Okay, possibly so, although no ordinary human has ever lived perfectly.

But then Peterson states that: “Jesus Christ was the only Christian.” That’s categorically untrue and makes it evident that Peterson still has some work to do on the subject, and I’m sure he will.

But Jesus was not a Christian. Christianity is for sinners, like me. In fact, everyone who has ever truly been a Christian, is a sinner, and more importantly, knows it.

And that’s the whole point. The difference between Christianity and religion, is that religions are about highly uncertain human efforts to find and appease God. Christianity is entirely about God finding and definitively rescuing imperfect people, and then, from an attitude of gratitude and responsibility, those imperfect Christians try to live the way that Jesus called for in the sermon on the Mount and his other homilies.

Peterson’s imperfect understanding of Christianity aside, if you don’t watch anything else this summer, or read any of my blogs, (but please do!), watch this 30 minute video, with your family. It’s excellent!

Have a great week!

Understanding Totalitarianism

George JonasHere’s the link to an article I saved from the National Post, September 12, 2012, written by the late, and very excellent, George Jonas. It perfectly encapsulates the view that any non-totalitarian would have; that is, that parents have a “prior right” to decide on all aspects of their children’s education. The “prior right” quote comes directly from the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

Note that Jonas was not a Christian, but a Jewish agnostic who had survived the Nazi Holocaust. Several of his family did not.

Joeseph GoerbbelsCompare his perspective on parental rights with that of Alberta’s increasingly totalitarian bureaucracy, the Alberta Department of Education, and Education Minister Eggen, who by his actions and utterances apparently agrees with Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda Minister who said: “The youth belong to us!” Wherever you live, it is increasingly likely that your Department of Education believes the same.

I suspect that George Jonas’ brush with the Nazis helped inform his opinion. He clearly understood that we ignore history at our peril.

Please take the time to read the article. It’s more urgent today than it was in 2012. And please share with your email list, and on Facebook and Twitter! Social media is the culture building tool of the 21st century. Let’s use it!

An Important Political Story

Dave 07There are three candidates running for the United Conservative Party (UCP) nomination in the new Calgary riding of Peigan. One of the candidates is Jeevan Mangat. Another is Tanya Fir whose campaign manager is Craig Chandler, a man who has often been a controversial figure within Alberta conservatism.

For the most part I try to keep away from direct political commentary, but I think you need to know about this. It’s a local story, but the principles involved apply far more widely.

Within the past couple of months, Craig Chandler and the Fir campaign have expressed displeasure with an advocacy organization which I  support, and one which I know for a fact will not endorse any candidate from any party.

This organization informed the Fir campaign of their nomination engagement process which involves presenting hard evidence regarding some of the highly controversial and wildly unscientific ideas that are currently being promoted in Alberta’s school system. These information sessions are available to any group, or to the nominees of any political party that reaches out to the organization. So far, Craig Chandler and the Fir campaign have not taken advantage of this opportunity.

Another competitor for the UCP nomination, Jeevan Mangat, did choose to put on a campaign event at which this advocacy organization was invited to speak. For some reason, Mr. Chandler was displeased.

Indeed, Mr. Chandler was sufficiently displeased to leave  a 59 second voicemail with the organization. The organization never gave me a transcript of the voicemail, but I have since been made aware of it. In it, Mr. Chandler states that he is “ticked off”, and that there would likely be Tanya Fir supporters at the Jeevan Mangat event, voicing their concerns “very loudly,” whatever that meant.

Sadly, Mr. Chandler goes on to say in the voicemail that: “A lot of us who are Christians and who are supporting Tanya…..”

Is Mr. Chandler implying that Christians, as a matter of principle, shouldn’t support someone who isn’t a Christian? If true, I would find that appalling.

downloadI know Jeevan Mangat personally, and while he is an adherent of the Sikh religion, he’s told me, repeatedly, that he wants to live in a society which operates on Judaeo-Christian values. That’s why his family moved to Canada when he was a little kid. And because he is committed to saving that Judaeo-Christian ethos in society, he became involved in politics.

Although Mr. Mangat obviously doesn’t call himself a Christian, in my experience, he consistently conducts himself in what would be called “a Christian” manner.”

If you live in Alberta, or especially if you have friends or family in the new Calgary riding of Peigan, I’d suggest that you make sure that they get this information right away. The vote is this week, Thursday, August 2 at the Riverbend Community Association.

We certainly do need political and cultural change. What we need to end are sleazy, heavy-handed, old-style politics.

I’m Dave Reesor, and that’s my opinion. What do you think?

Jordan Peterson & the Speech Nazis

Peterson_Lecture_(33522701146)The anti-free speech, anti-freedom of assembly Progressivist Left is at it again. The target of their opprobrium is Prof. Jordan Peterson whose original sin was to insist that he would not submit to being ordered, by government, to speak certain words. In saner times he would have been lauded as a free-speech champion.

But we’re now living at George Orwell’s Animal Farm where we’re all equal, but some are more equal than others. Or in the current context: “Free speech for all, but only for you if you agree with me.”

So a bunch of Calgary’s Progressivist artistes have gotten together and begun circulating a petition to insist that Calgary’s Arts Commons cancel the July 27 event at which Jordan Peterson is the main speaker. Here’s some of what they say in their letter to Arts Commons.

“The dangerous ideas that Peterson stands and advocates for mongers hatred and discrimination against many of our staff.” But they failed to specify which of Peterson’s ideas are actually dangerous.

Personal note. I actually went to a Jordan Peterson event a couple of years ago when he was just starting to become famous, and since then I’ve watched a number of his videos and lectures. From what I’ve seen, only the clinically insane could be influenced by Peterson’s words to actually hate or harm anyone. Neither Peterson, or even these self important artists and academics incite me to hatred, but the latter’s totalitarian inclinations certainly incite me to disgust.

Because in another place in their letter they talk about “ideas”, but then they insist that Peterson’s insistence on his right to free speech subverts “ideas which are meant to protect, not be weaponized.”

** Weaponized speech is currently the handy-dandy-ist shriek-trigger for the Progressivist Left.

They go on: “Note that we are not writing this letter simply because we disagree with Peterson’s views; we feel that any individual or group of people, Peterson in this case, whose ideas and actions directly jeopardize the safety and freedom of others.”

This “danger to safety and freedom” is patent nonsense. In fact, Arts Commons says they must increase security for the sold-out event, because the Progressivist’s tantrum brigade are likely to show up. There is physical danger from them, and there is real danger to freedom of speech from the very artists and academics who, with breathtaking hypocrisy,  have forever insisted on their right to say, write, paint, and act out whatever they wish.

LandscapSo what’s next? Peterson has sold over 1 million books in the last six months, so is the Progressivist Left now going to organize a Peterson book burning? In the 20th century, the Left, operating under the banners of Communism, Nazism, Maoism and other Left-wing-isms, made book burning and book banning part of their modus operandi. And for good measure they killed 100 million of their citizens.

Unfortunately, the Peterson event is sold out or I’d strongly urge you to get tickets. But Peterson has some excellent videos on YouTube and they’re great for your millennial children or grandchildren who are struggling with what to do with their life. Peterson actually says that life’s tough, but well worth living with all you’ve got. He even says: “Do good.” Admittedly, that is old-fashioned thinking; its the thinking that inspired the pioneers that built this country over the past 200 years.

Peterson is certainly dangerous, but watch this brief video of him speaking, and then you decide who and what he’s dangerous to. And you’ll understand what all the Leftist, Progressivist, Fascist caterwauling is about. Peterson’s resuscitation of common-sense poses a mortal danger to their very existence.

The Right to Discriminate

Dave 07To Discriminate means to recognize a distinction between things. I think that even the dimmest among us recognizes that red and green are two different colors and that some people have better voices than others and some people are better athletes than others. So we discriminate when we go to a concert, or an athletic event.

But discrimination also means to make an unjust or prejudicial distinction in the treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, sex, or age. I think that most people recognize that that type of discrimination is seriously wrong, but should it be illegal? As a Christian with a distinctly libertarian bent, I don’t think so, unless it advocates, or acts out violence.

But then, at an even deeper level, discrimination finds itself at the intersect between choices, and rights, and that’s where a lot of seriously wrongheaded thinking takes place, particularly as regards sexuality.

I’m straight, and I had no choice in that matter; it’s just what I am. But nearly 52 years ago I made a choice to end my single existence, and to get married. However, my choice was not automatically granted; I had to ask Meritha, (it was on about the 5th date and at first she thought I was joking), and she had to accept, otherwise I might still be single.

My heterosexuality was not a choice; but to be married was, and it was contingent on the acceptance of my choice by someone else. And even then, after I had Meritha on side, we  had to choose when and where to be married; who to perform the ceremony; who to cater, and so on. And every one of our choices had to be agreed to by someone else, and every one of those individuals had every right to refuse our choice, on any grounds whatsoever.

Recently, the US Supreme Court upheld a Colorado baker’s right to refuse to bake a cake celebrating a same-sex marriage. It’s regarded as a victory for freedom of religion, but there are some questions as to how effective it will be in the long run. Because there is increasingly a lot of severely muddle-headed thinking around sexuality.

So again, here’s what I think. It’s not scientifically supported, but let’s allow that the same-sex couple in Colorado were both born gay and that they had no choice in their sexual attraction. But their “marriage” unequivocally represented a continuum of choices. First of all, who to marry. Once they were past that hurdle, who to perform the ceremony, where to hold the ceremony and the celebration afterwards. Then, who to cater the event, and who they chose to make the cake.

Every one of those was a choice, not a right, and for the marriage plans to go forward, those choices either had be accepted by the other parties involved, or a different choice made. I personally see no reason that those choices could not be refused on any grounds whatsoever, but for certain, a person should have been able to refuse them on the grounds of their freedom of association, or of conscience. Those are universally recognized human rights. Marriage is not an inherent human right, nor are the rituals surrounding marriage.

trans-man-having-babyWe need to start to think clearly about sexuality, because when you don’t you end up with situations like this.

Try to figure it out.

Then think of the child.

I’m Dave Reesor, and please let me know what you think.

Free Speech and the Left

Dave 07As you know, John Carpay and the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom (JCCF) are in the forefront of fighting back against Progressivist attacks on basic human rights, including attacks on free speech.

Free speech used to mean that you could say anything you wanted, provided it didn’t promote or incite violence. Free speech even included hate speech, provided it didn’t promote or incite violence.

For example, you could say that you hated old white men, or even more specifically, that you hate Dave Reesor, and by the way, so should everyone else. In fact, I’d defend your right to say exactly that, in public and in private, or even to take out an ad in the newspaper advocating: “Hate Dave Reesor.” Only if you promote violence have you stepped over the line.

That’s free speech, or at least it was.

But now, in our “I’m a victim”, post-modern / post-rational new world, you can find yourself in trouble if you hurt someone’s feelings, or even say something that might hurt someone’s or some group’s feelings. And apparently, there are endless groups that are victims of white privilege, or ancient wrongs done to their ancestors, or some other debilitating grievance.

So we have endless groups that must not be offended; that is, with the exception of conservatives, practicing Christians and Jews, aboriginal Canadians and women who don’t vote Progressivist, etc.. In the United States, the old free speech rules apply to conservative women and conservative African-Americans; everyone else is a victim, and must not be offended.

John CarpayThis imbalance around free speech is enthusiastically abetted by most Canadian and American universities. In this short video, John Carpay explains exactly how universities are shutting down free speech. The JCCF believes in free speech, including your free speech; it fights unfair university policies, and it usually wins! If you believe in free speech, you should support them.

And if you haven’t already, it would be greatly appreciated if you supported us by becoming a member of the Let’s Do It Ourselves online community.

Have a great weekend!
