Jordan Peterson & the Speech Nazis

Peterson_Lecture_(33522701146)The anti-free speech, anti-freedom of assembly Progressivist Left is at it again. The target of their opprobrium is Prof. Jordan Peterson whose original sin was to insist that he would not submit to being ordered, by government, to speak certain words. In saner times he would have been lauded as a free-speech champion.

But we’re now living at George Orwell’s Animal Farm where we’re all equal, but some are more equal than others. Or in the current context: “Free speech for all, but only for you if you agree with me.”

So a bunch of Calgary’s Progressivist artistes have gotten together and begun circulating a petition to insist that Calgary’s Arts Commons cancel the July 27 event at which Jordan Peterson is the main speaker. Here’s some of what they say in their letter to Arts Commons.

“The dangerous ideas that Peterson stands and advocates for mongers hatred and discrimination against many of our staff.” But they failed to specify which of Peterson’s ideas are actually dangerous.

Personal note. I actually went to a Jordan Peterson event a couple of years ago when he was just starting to become famous, and since then I’ve watched a number of his videos and lectures. From what I’ve seen, only the clinically insane could be influenced by Peterson’s words to actually hate or harm anyone. Neither Peterson, or even these self important artists and academics incite me to hatred, but the latter’s totalitarian inclinations certainly incite me to disgust.

Because in another place in their letter they talk about “ideas”, but then they insist that Peterson’s insistence on his right to free speech subverts “ideas which are meant to protect, not be weaponized.”

** Weaponized speech is currently the handy-dandy-ist shriek-trigger for the Progressivist Left.

They go on: “Note that we are not writing this letter simply because we disagree with Peterson’s views; we feel that any individual or group of people, Peterson in this case, whose ideas and actions directly jeopardize the safety and freedom of others.”

This “danger to safety and freedom” is patent nonsense. In fact, Arts Commons says they must increase security for the sold-out event, because the Progressivist’s tantrum brigade are likely to show up. There is physical danger from them, and there is real danger to freedom of speech from the very artists and academics who, with breathtaking hypocrisy,  have forever insisted on their right to say, write, paint, and act out whatever they wish.

LandscapSo what’s next? Peterson has sold over 1 million books in the last six months, so is the Progressivist Left now going to organize a Peterson book burning? In the 20th century, the Left, operating under the banners of Communism, Nazism, Maoism and other Left-wing-isms, made book burning and book banning part of their modus operandi. And for good measure they killed 100 million of their citizens.

Unfortunately, the Peterson event is sold out or I’d strongly urge you to get tickets. But Peterson has some excellent videos on YouTube and they’re great for your millennial children or grandchildren who are struggling with what to do with their life. Peterson actually says that life’s tough, but well worth living with all you’ve got. He even says: “Do good.” Admittedly, that is old-fashioned thinking; its the thinking that inspired the pioneers that built this country over the past 200 years.

Peterson is certainly dangerous, but watch this brief video of him speaking, and then you decide who and what he’s dangerous to. And you’ll understand what all the Leftist, Progressivist, Fascist caterwauling is about. Peterson’s resuscitation of common-sense poses a mortal danger to their very existence.

The Right to Discriminate

Dave 07To Discriminate means to recognize a distinction between things. I think that even the dimmest among us recognizes that red and green are two different colors and that some people have better voices than others and some people are better athletes than others. So we discriminate when we go to a concert, or an athletic event.

But discrimination also means to make an unjust or prejudicial distinction in the treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, sex, or age. I think that most people recognize that that type of discrimination is seriously wrong, but should it be illegal? As a Christian with a distinctly libertarian bent, I don’t think so, unless it advocates, or acts out violence.

But then, at an even deeper level, discrimination finds itself at the intersect between choices, and rights, and that’s where a lot of seriously wrongheaded thinking takes place, particularly as regards sexuality.

I’m straight, and I had no choice in that matter; it’s just what I am. But nearly 52 years ago I made a choice to end my single existence, and to get married. However, my choice was not automatically granted; I had to ask Meritha, (it was on about the 5th date and at first she thought I was joking), and she had to accept, otherwise I might still be single.

My heterosexuality was not a choice; but to be married was, and it was contingent on the acceptance of my choice by someone else. And even then, after I had Meritha on side, we  had to choose when and where to be married; who to perform the ceremony; who to cater, and so on. And every one of our choices had to be agreed to by someone else, and every one of those individuals had every right to refuse our choice, on any grounds whatsoever.

Recently, the US Supreme Court upheld a Colorado baker’s right to refuse to bake a cake celebrating a same-sex marriage. It’s regarded as a victory for freedom of religion, but there are some questions as to how effective it will be in the long run. Because there is increasingly a lot of severely muddle-headed thinking around sexuality.

So again, here’s what I think. It’s not scientifically supported, but let’s allow that the same-sex couple in Colorado were both born gay and that they had no choice in their sexual attraction. But their “marriage” unequivocally represented a continuum of choices. First of all, who to marry. Once they were past that hurdle, who to perform the ceremony, where to hold the ceremony and the celebration afterwards. Then, who to cater the event, and who they chose to make the cake.

Every one of those was a choice, not a right, and for the marriage plans to go forward, those choices either had be accepted by the other parties involved, or a different choice made. I personally see no reason that those choices could not be refused on any grounds whatsoever, but for certain, a person should have been able to refuse them on the grounds of their freedom of association, or of conscience. Those are universally recognized human rights. Marriage is not an inherent human right, nor are the rituals surrounding marriage.

trans-man-having-babyWe need to start to think clearly about sexuality, because when you don’t you end up with situations like this.

Try to figure it out.

Then think of the child.

Cool Christians

Dave 07

Recent article in Vice.com. “Meet the woke young people trying to make Christianity cool again.” Apparently, “Cool Christians” totally believe in anthropogenic global warming and climate change orthodoxy, and in human rights and racial equality.

Before reading the story, it had never occurred to me that the point of adopting a worldview, like Christianity, or Islam, or Atheism, was to be cool, but rather, to find, and live in the truth. I still believe that.

But anyway; is it true that human produced CO2 is the major driver of climate change, and the warming trend? Since the current warming began about 1850, which is recognized as the end of the Little Ice Age, – Cold! Advancing glaciers! Frost in July! – it would seem that the current warming is natural Thousands of climate scientists agree. (Don’t bother fact checking at the CBC)

As for climate change itself; if we could bring up the spirits of our ancestors going back for the last hundred thousand years, it would be instructive to ask them if they think climate change is something new. Of course, from history and from the geological record,  we know that it’s not. So, while believing in catastrophic, human caused, global warming and climate change may be cool, it simply isn’t true.

Genuine Christian belief has always supported the right of all people, to respect, and security, in the broader community. (Like any organization, the Christian church has a right to set its rules for membership. And as with any group of humans, there are people who don’t follow the rules.)

It seems to me that respect should go both ways. A same-sex couple’s right to live in peace and security does not include them being able to force others to participate their choices.  My choice does not override your freedom.

For instance, whether or not to marry is a choice. Gay or straight, your choice to marry depends on someone else agreeing to that choice. And your choice of caterer, or officiator should depend on said individual agreeing to that choice.

I think we’ve gone way overboard in conflating fundamental rights, with an ersatz right to force someone else to acquiesce to, or even participate in our choices. In fact, I’m enough of a small L libertarian to say that if a condominium owner doesn’t want to rent to old white heterosexual couples, that’s their right. And I’d defend it.

I’d even say that if the fire department refused my choice to fulfill my lifelong dream to become a firefighter, (it isn’t) simply because I’m too old, that should be their right. Oh yeah; it always has been their right. Institutionalized Ageism!

Further to marriage; considering that it’s a biological fact that we evolved / were created, to mate heterosexually, I’d still tend to agree with the Supreme Court of Canada which said, about 25 years ago: “Throughout its history, marriage has been fundamentally about children, and is therefore, by nature, heterosexual.”

Of course marriage is no longer fundamentally about children, but rather about adults living out their choices. Let’s at least acknowledge, that after thousands of years, the fundamental definition of marriage has been changed.

Referencing the latest LGBTQ “rights” fad; while your insisting that that a child with a penis might be a girl!!, may be almost too cool to be true; the question is, is it true? There remains some doubt.

Finally, racial equality. My Mennonite (Christian) ancestors moved to Pennsylvania in 1739 and immediately joined a letter writing campaign opposing slavery, directed at the U.S. Congress. I’ve seen one of the letters. They kept it up until 1865, when Lincoln freed the slaves.

In Britain, an evangelical Christian named William Wilberforce spent almost his entire lifetime opposing slavery, and finally succeeding in having it outlawed throughout the British Empire. That was the first time, in human history, that slavery had been expunged from a society.

Jesus himself, by very pointedly and purposefully telling his disciples and the Jewish leaders of the day the story of the Good Samaritan, was setting the standard for interracial/intercultural attitudes. To the Jewish elites of that day the very term, Good Samaritan, was an oxymoron. They regarded Samaritans the same way that ISIS, and the extremists of the left and right, and those lonely nutters in the KKK, currently regard Jews.

Black Lives Matter? What about Asian, and Southeast Asian, and Native American lives? Dare I even ask: “What about old white Canadian lives?”

Anyway, when Christians think and act as racists, they’ve gone rogue. The rule hasn’t changed. But then, Christianity is all about the fact that we’ve ALL gone rogue in one way or another. In the movie “Unforgiven”, Billy the Kidd tells Clint Eastwood’s character that he’d shot one of the bad guys, but that: “He had it coming.” Eastwood’s character growls: “We all have it coming.”

And so we do. Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter are the answer to that grave truth.

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day when we remember all those young people that lost their lives defending freedom. So let’s remember.

And then let’s continue to remember next week, and next month, and in the years to come; that freedom isn’t free. Nor is it guaranteed.

Stop Feeding the Critters!

Dave 07I’ve been fortunate enough to travel a bit, mostly on business, and one of my favourite places is Washington DC. I’ve visited the monuments – the Lincoln Memorial is, to use the word appropriately for once, awesome. It takes more insight than I can comprehend to convey what Lincoln did at Gettysburg, using only 270 words.

And the Vietnam War Memorial is pure genius; nothing but a black granite wall engraved with the names of 58,000 Vietnam vets who died in that conflict. Vietnam Memorial.jpgIt begins as a wedge and gradually heightens, building emotion as you walk along it. 58,000 names truly is overwhelming. But then you think of the American Civil War with more than 600,000 dead, or the 20th century with over 100 million civilian deaths, killed mostly by the Communists, or the National Socialists / NAZIS, for the greater good of an imagined utopian state. Socialism’s ultimate experiments.

But underneath the facade of the inspiring monuments and beautiful buildings, Washington DC is a swamp. (I guess because I’m an old farm boy the picture in my mind is more of a barnyard that hasn’t been cleaned out for decades. It’s a breeding ground for maggots, and a nasty mess, and whoever gets around to cleaning it is going to get nasty.)

But let’s stick with the contemporary metaphor. Donald Trump says he’s gone to Washington to “drain the swamp.” That’s good, because last November the American electorate hired him to do exactly that.

Unsurprisingly, the Swamp Critters don’t like it.

Because if you’ve followed American politics like I have, since November 1963, you’ve come to realize that the Washington swamp grows darker and murkier by the decade. Swamp Critter Elitists have increasingly taken control, and they include many – not all –  Democratic and Republican politicians, lobbyists, lawyers, leeches – oh yeah, I already mentioned the lobbyists and lawyers , and the bureaucracy which is often known as the deep state.

And many bureaucrats in the deep state are convinced that politicians come to Washington to learn how things work, rather than the other way around. And by the way, the deep state bureaucracy in Ottawa is just as convinced. Their view is that if a political party doesn’t lean Progressivist Left, they have no right to the levers of power, no matter what the electorate has said.

And of course, Washington’s (and Ottawa’s) self-styled Elites also include the media, and while they aren’t officially part of government apparatus, they’re definitely Swamp Critters.

Considering that Trump Derangement Syndrome has reached pandemic levels, the administration has nevertheless made admirable headway over the last six months in reducing or eliminating dozens of job-killing regulations.

For the first time ever, there seems to be an awareness in Washington that, vis-à-vis North Korea, kicking the can down the road is no longer an option. Illegal immigration is way down; the stock market, and permanent jobs, are up.

There have indeed been too many amateur hour stumbles, and too many ill-advised Tweets (Somebody, please, Duck Tape His Thumbs!), but the simple fact is that American voters hired Trump because they were sick of professional politicians.

And put the worst spin on it that you will; the Trump crowd’s sometimes unwise, but so far, non-criminal interactions with the Russians, pale in comparison to Hillary Clinton’s clearly criminal carelessness with classified emails, destruction of evidence, perjury, and influence peddling.

Add to that the fact that if Hillary had moved into the White House, Bill would have moved in there with her. Interns beware!

Swamp-Thing-25-00.pngI’m not a huge Donald Trump fan, but I’m a Yuge fan of what he was hired to do, and I genuinely hope for his success.

But he’ll need to smarten up, and learn to STOP FEEDING THE CRITTERS!

Soon please!

Forgive him, for he was a Democrat

Dave 07Donald Trump has been in the news a lot lately. (That’s my entry in the understatement of the century contest.) The left, and the mainstream media – yes I know, it’s the same thing – dined out during the election, and still do, on Donald Trump’s past crudeness and vulgarity, and his disrespect for women.

Most famously, in 2005, Donald Trump had a recorded conversation in which he made vulgar and unconscionable comments about his modus operandi for “seducing” women; hardly the appropriate word, but anyway. It was characterized by his supporters as locker room talk; that’s hardly a locker room any decent man would want to be in.

But here’s a fact, and I’m astonished that, to my knowledge, no one else has brought this up. In 2005, Donald Trump was a Democrat, and he was simply carrying on like Democrats carry on.

Consider this. While married to Jackie Kennedy, and, while President, the iconic John F. Kennedy dallied almost daily, with a long string of mistresses. LBJNot to be outshone, Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon Johnson, bragged that he’d had more women by accident than Kennedy ever had on purpose. Johnson’s respect for women apparently extended to those who would sleep with him.

Bill Clinton’s high profile, illicit sexual encounters began during his time as Arkansas governor and didn’t end with his Presidency. The Oval Office had to be sterilized after he left in 2001. (Just kidding, but not much.)

hillaryAnd on the “ladies” side, there are numerous eyewitness accounts illustrating that Hillary Clinton possesses one of the foulest mouths on the planet. As someone said, she is a very nasty woman indeed. Follow the links if you don’t believe me.

Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards carried on an affair while his wife was dying of cancer, and the unfortunately unforgettable Democratic congressman, Anthony Weiner, achieved fame for his very personalized selfies. Weinergate was named after him.

Every one of them – except the thoroughly nasty Hillary – could be characterized as a misogynist, yet, for some reason yet undiscovered by psychiatry, Democratic men are still revered by modern feminists; you know, the ditzes who favor homophobic and misogynistic, sharia law governed countries, over modern and libertarian Israel.

Be that as it may, my point is that in 2009, four years after his locker room verbal hemorrhage, Trump converted to Republicanism. (Maybe guilt overtook him.) Considering his two steps forward, one step back pattern of behavior, he’s still, quite obviously, a recovering Democrat. He still has some distance to go, but overall, his behavior has improved as a Republican.

And that’s the perspective from The Great White North.

Best regards to each of you

Sandra and Hillary

sandra-jansenI expect that I would disagree with Sandra Jansen about most things. I see her as an Elitist Progressive of the first order, and I think the manner of her crossing the floor of the Alberta legislature, from a purportedly Conservative party, straight into the embrace of a committed socialist party, says all you need to know about Sandra..

But in this video I agree with her 100%. She is speaking to the Alberta legislature about the verbal abuse she received after crossing the floor. However much I deplore the manner of her crossing, the subsequent abuse she received is outrageous.

hillary-clintonThe same applies to some of the slurs directed towards Hillary Clinton. Based on evidence, I consider her to be a liar who has engaged in criminal behavior of various kinds; most recently the destruction of evidence pertinent to her email server fiasco. Nevertheless, she is a woman, and crude slurs against her womanhood are  unacceptable, and in practical terms, counterproductive.

Some of the creeps using this language undoubtedly consider themselves to be conservatives. They are not. A core value of conservatism is, and always will be, respect for womanhood. In that regard, left-wing icons like John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton, are not conservatives, and 10 years ago, apparently, neither was Donald Trump. The next four years will reveal if he’s truly made the transition to conservatism.

Because it’s the left that goes to seminars and shouts down those with whom they disagree. It’s the left that throws temper tantrums over disappointing electoral outcomes. And it’s the left; people like the American comedian/political commentator, Bill Maher, who refer to women using the c word, and get a pass, at least in the liberal/Progressivist media.

If you’re not a member of the left, and you use that kind of language towards women, I don’t know where you are, politically speaking, but you’re not a conservative. What you are, is a disgrace.

Many of you know that I am involved with an organization called Let’s Do It Ourselves where we are in the process of writing our constitution, which includes our Beliefs; Rights; and Responsibilities.

One of our Responsibilities is to engage in careful, courageous, and complete consideration of issues; to form an opinion, and then, enthusiastically defend it. But foul language and irrelevant ad hominems are not acceptable. Any member who uses them will have his or her membership revoked.

If you agree with our position, and, that conservatives need to cooperate, contribute, and communicate, I invite you to JOIN US!

I just received my latest copy of The Economist Magazine, and they have a fascinating article on the substantial benefits!! of increased CO2 in the atmosphere. We’ll examine the article next week.

Happy Thanksgiving to our American readers, and may we all survive Black Friday!
